It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Gordon Barraclough Haselhurst, Baron Haselhurst, PC, who died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on 31st May, 2026 at the age of 88 years.
A devoted public servant, Alan dedicated 44 years to the House of Commons, most notably representing the constituency of Saffron Walden from 1977 to 2017, during which time he demonstrated exemplary commitment to his electorate and served his constituents with unwavering dedication. He served with distinction as the Chairman of Ways and Means and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons between 1997 and 2010, earning the deep respect of colleagues across the political spectrum.
Alan had a keen interest in the Commonwealth and was the Chairman of the International Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. Following his long career in the Commons, he continued his public service in the House of Lords until his retirement in 2024.
Beyond his parliamentary duties, Alan was a treasured husband to Angela and father to David, Mark and Emma. He was a champion for his local community and a passionate cricket enthusiast who authored publications on the sport and served as Secretary of the All-Party Cricket Group.
He will be greatly missed.
